Remembering Malcolm Berman

This week, GBMC lost a beloved member of our GBMC family and the most impactful philanthropic leader at GBMC: Malcolm Berman.

Together with his wife Sandy, Malcolm transformed patient care at GBMC. Their spirit of giving inspired the creation of the Sandra & Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute, the Sandra & Malcolm Berman Comprehensive Breast Care Center, and the Sandra & Malcolm Berman Medical Office Building, each of which ensured access to advanced, accessible, compassionate care. And in perhaps the most heartfelt tribute of all, Malcolm named the Sandra R. Berman Pavilion in honor of Sandy, his wife of 68 years. It was an enduring symbol of his deep devotion—not just to her, but to a shared life of purpose and philanthropy.

What stood out to me most about Malcolm was his love for Sandy. I’ve never known a man who so openly and consistently expressed his love for his wife as Malcolm did. I will never forget the day he sat in my office and described how much he wanted to honor Sandy with a new cancer center. That conversation and the impact it led to is something that has stuck with me.

The results of Malcolm and Sandy’s philanthropy are visible every day. From the patients receiving life-saving treatments to those who park just steps from their appointments in the Berman Garage connected to our cancer center, their generosity continues to bring hope and dignity to thousands of lives.

As we mourn Malcolm’s passing, we also celebrate the remarkable legacy he leaves behind – a legacy that has resulted in a better tomorrow for our community. My thoughts are with Sandy and the entire Berman family during this difficult time.

A New Chapter at GBMC

Next week, on Monday, September 15, Dr. Paari Gopalakrishnan will begin his tenure as President and CEO of GBMC HealthCare. Dr. Gopalakrishnan is a thoughtful and experienced leader who is deeply committed to the mission and vision that guide us.

It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve this extraordinary health system and community. I am grateful to every colleague, partner, and patient who has been part of this journey with me. As I step away, I do so with immense pride in what we’ve accomplished and with full confidence that GBMC is in excellent hands for the future.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead, and thank you for continuing to make GBMC HealthCare a place for health, healing, and hope – all of the things we’d want for our loved ones.
